Last week’s April writing challenge was about describing something new. The goal was to give a reader, through description, an experience she hasn’t had before. This week’s challenge is the other side of that coin: Write 3-5 paragraphs describing the feeling of being embarrassed.
Everyone has been embarrassed. It’s a cocktail of emotions we’re familiar with, laced with varying amounts of fear, anxiety, anger, insecurity and regret. Because you can be sure that any reader has had this experience, describing it should be a little different from describing a new experience. In this case, you’re not giving your reader something new. You’re conjuring up memories and emotions of something old.
You can approach this one of two ways. You could elect to describe the sensation of embarrassment in the abstract sense, or you can attach your description to something concrete. Either works just fine. The goal, regardless of how you go about approaching the challenge, is to remind the reader in a very real, emotional way of what it feels like to be embarrassed.
You’ve hit the nail on the head if reading your short description makes the reader uncomfortable.
